Trip to Louth

…We got a №3 bus into Grimsby; and [from there] the №51 (10:35) to Louth. We wanted to try The Wheatsheaf at the back of the church for lunch, so rang the bell almost as soon as the bus returned to the main road after its excursion through the industrial estate and housing estates in the north of the town; but the first bus stop was well past there, at the Market Place, after the bus had turned left and gone down Mercer Row.

We entered The Wheatsheaf, and found no menus. When we spoke to one of the staff we found out why; one had to book for lunch, and today they were fully booked. So we left there, and tried a pub we’d passed on a number of occasions with Tony Rushby, as we would walk from the car park of the Co-op supermarket to organ concerts at the Town Hall and vice versa: The Miller’s Daughter.

I had a pint of San Miguel and Janet a lemonade with blackcurrant cordial. I had a “burger” with two Southern-fried chicken pieces, cheese and bacon, salad, coleslaw, onion rings and chips. The only thing about it that I didn’t like was that it was served on a slate, with the chips in a little “chip basket” that didn’t lend itself to sprinkling vinegar on them. Janet had “Hunter’s Chicken”, served, as on a couple of previous occasions when I’ve had it, in a gratin dish. Because the food was taking its time to arrive, I had a second San Miguel.

In the adjacent side room, where the toilets were, was also a display of second-hand books, available for a donation to a charity (I forget which). So I got a New Testament in a version of which I’d never heard till today: the “Recovery Version”.

“The New Testament — Recovery Version”

From there we found our way to Tertulia, intending for Janet to have a dessert and me to have a coffee. Last time we tried to go there, we found it closed, but thought that might just be a temporary thing; now it was clear from the “to let” sign that the business was closed permanently.

So we found and entered Tina’s Café on the corner of Cornmarket and New Street, where I had a typical British filter coffee (i.e. abominably weak), and Janet had a slice of lemon-and-poppy-seed cake and a hot chocolate. From there, we went the length of New Street, right into Eastgate and left to the end of Cannon Street, intending to visit the museum just beyond there. But we found it “CLOSED for the winter”.

So we visited St. James’ Church instead.

We found there a “Christmas Tree Festival”, with scores of decorated Christmas trees and Christmas tree-like objects (e.g. cases of gin bottles stacked up in Christmas-tree shape) by different participating groups.

A man was playing a grand piano in the centre aisle, and there was a warm, festive atmosphere.

I had a cafetière coffee in the café under the tower there, and Janet had a tropical-fruits flavour soda-pop. From there, we walked along Mercer Row, rounding the corner of the Market Place to use the ATM at the NatWest bank, before resuming our way along Eastgate to the bus station. According to our timetable, the bus №51 would depart from Louth bus station at 16:15; but according to the one displayed in the bus station, it would be 15:25 (boarded, 16:22). We arrived in Grimsby, ca.5.30pm, went to the convenience store for a 660ml bottle of San Miguel, then went to Casper’s. I had a 10" pepperoni pizza, with a somewhat too-thick base and rather too much cheese for my liking, and Janet had pasta spirals with a Bolognese topping. When we came out of there, a №3 bus deliberately went its way as we were clearly and visibly hurrying for it [my execration is deleted], so we had to wait 10 minutes or so for a №10 to arrive. We boarded at “18:35”, but it wasn’t scheduled to depart till 18:45.… [Back home, I] looked up the “Recovery Version” of the Bible and related things (00:36–00:45). Its translator, Witness Lee, was of the same ilk as Watchman Nee of The Normal Christian Life.
