Janet got up ca.7am.… We went down for breakfast ca.8am. Before returning to the room Janet got a statement of our account, which tallied with her own calculation of what we’d spent over and above the £30 each per day dinner allowance. Drinks weren’t included in the allowance. Back in the room, Janet packed the suitcase and I my back-pack. She sent me down to settle our account. We left the hotel just before 10 o’clock, and G— B— arrived not long after 10am. The only delay en route was a very brief hold-up at some road-works traffic lights before we left the city. We headed south along the A19, then before we got to Selby we turned left at a roundabout and went east-southeast along the A63 which took us through Hemingbrough and as far as the approach to Howden.… I’m not sure at that point what route we took to the eastbound M62, for I was aware of Howden Minster away to the left but we didn’t pass close by it: perhaps, where the A63 turns left and proceeds through Howden, we kept straight on (on the unclassified “Barnhill Lane”, then its continuation “Booth Ferry Road” (B1228)), for I noted that we were on the A614 as we proceeded to the M62 motorway. That’s perhaps when I saw the Minster to the left, as we were on the feeder road to the motorway. At the end of the motorway its transition into the A63 was almost indistinguishable. We proceeded along this as far as the turn-off to the Humber Bridge. From there on, the route was the same as the outward one. We got home ca.11.45am.…
