Raincliffe Hotel, Scarborough (check-out)
10:00 G— B—

Janet got up at ca.7am, and I shaved and showered from ca.7.15am after she vacated the bathroom.… We went down for breakfast just after 8am. I had the usual orange juice, corn flakes and coffee, and nothing else. Because Janet had frozen a couple of rolls with pastrami for my lunch, I didn’t make an exception and have bacon etc. Janet had mixed fruit, followed by bread with a sliced banana spread on it. She did the bulk of the packing; I only had my stuff, e.g. computers and peripherals, to pack. She went down to settle the bill, which agreed with her own tally.

Janet’s reckoning

Receipt, issued “09:20”

I went out to take a couple of photos, before also photographing the room with its four-poster bed and ceramic elephant side-tables.

Room 5, Raincliffe Hotel, Scarborough

Around 9.40am we made our way down with the baggage. I left that in the corner of the hall out of anyone’s way, and we sat in the guest lounge, the one with the pool table and bar. Some minutes later I remembered about the key, so I handed that in at the reception hatch to Vicky. I’d left the door of our room unlocked, though, and indeed we decided to use the loo there before the taxi would arrive. After 10 o’clock passed and no-one had come yet, I rang
G— B— (10:08); but no sooner had he answered the call, than he found himself approaching the hotel.… The route was almost completely along “A” roads, with traffic queues at one or two points; the roads I noted were: “A165”, “A1035”, “A164”. That took us across the Humber Bridge, for which we used, as on the outward journey, the queue-free “tag” lane. Thence, along the A15, the A180, and home. En route, Graham commented that according to the minibus’s thermometer it was 25°C outside. There was air-conditioning in the vehicle, so it was cool within. It had been cool and overcast in Scarborough when we set out. On the approach to Grimsby, the thermometer still reported 23°C; and indeed, when we got out at home (ca.12.10pm), opening the vehicle door felt a bit like opening an oven door. It was sunny and bright also.…
