[2022] Trip to Lincoln: visit to the Museum of Lincolnshire Life …Janet and I left home not long after 7.40am. A №9 bus passed just before we got to the main road from Lestrange Street. We walked to the next bus stop to await the №3 bus (boarded, 07:59). We waited for Freshney Place to be opened at 8.30am, so we could use the loos there. On our way back, and approaching Riverhead Exchange at 8.36am, we were dismayed to see the №53 that earlier we’d seen waiting there at “Stand G”, depart. But as we wondered what to do, we saw another №53 bus turn into Town Hall Street; it went around the block, approached, stopped at “Stand G”, and we boarded (08:39). It went mostly along the A46, with diversions to visit Laceby, Caistor, Market Rasen, Dunholme and Welton, and Nettleham, and towards the end went along the Outer Circular Road and passed Lincoln County Hospital. On the way, on a number of occasions, I was aware that there was a smell of manure: muck spreading, presumably.… The bus arrived at 10:21, eight minutes ahead of schedule. We checked the closing time at the café in Lincoln Central Bus Station (4.30pm, or ca.4.00pm if not busy), but in the event didn’t go there, as we had last time. We turned right along Sincil Street, crossed the Witham by the footbridge,— Saturday 30 July 2022 10:35:58 Looking west along the River Witham, Lincoln Saturday 30 July 2022 10:35:58 (detail) High Bridge, Lincoln —turned left along Waterside North, and decided to go in Stokes High Bridge Café, which was facing us, standing on the bridge actually over the river (“High Bridge”). There were seats available up the narrow staircases on the second floor (“third”, US English). I had a small americano with extra shot, and I can’t remember what Janet had. Saturday 30 July 2022 10:44:48 Stokes High Bridge Café, Lincoln Saturday 30 July 2022 11:02:58 Stokes High Bridge Café, Lincoln From there, we proceeded north along High Street, and right along Saltergate, intending to have lunch at the Still, as last time; but we were disappointed to be told that they weren’t doing meals at the moment because they didn’t have a chef. She suggested William Foster and The Mailbox in the opposite direction on Guildhall Street, but both of these had loud music playing. So we passed under the arch of the Stonebow and carried on up High Street. We looked at establishments along there, and along The Strait and all the way up Steep Hill, but either we didn’t like their fare or they had music playing. Saturday 30 July 2022 11:23:40 Steep Hill, Lincoln Finally, at the south-east corner of the crossroads of Steep Hill, Castle Hill, Bailgate and Exchequer Gate, we went in the Magna Carta. We got there ca.11.30am, and food wasn’t going to be served till noon; but we stayed. The food prices were reasonable as compared with pubs in the Grimsby area, but e.g. the price of a pint of San Miguel was £5.10. I had two: one initially; and one with the food order. We both had BBQ chicken. After we’d settled, some loud-ish music did in fact start; but it was “live”: guitar and vocal. I forgot to ask for an extra shot, but the coffee was strong enough anyway. There were grounds in the bottom of the cup; I think that’s because the coffee machine was broken. (They weren’t, e.g., able to do cappuccino or caffè latte.) Janet cut the crusts off her toasted cheese sandwich, so I ate them. Now we only had ca.20 minutes before our bus was due, so we hurried back (which was not welcome to Janet, especially down Steep Hill) more or less the way we’d come (we went back along Waterside South, not Waterside North along which we’d come), and boarded the waiting №53 bus with four minutes to spare (15:36). At Riverhead Exchange, there was a №3 bus waiting, so we boarded that (17:18).… [2022] |
