Trip to Hull

…Managed to shave four days’ growth before going out, though Janet did go on ahead before I was ready to leave home. Indeed, I had to hurry — run some of the way — to join her at the bus stop in time (№250 bus boarded, 09:52). The bus was rather cool, initially anyway, so I kept my hood over my head. On the way, to ward off nausea, Janet sucked Fox’s Glacier Dark boiled sweets; and when she did so, she offered me one. The third had acquired a very sticky coating; and when I felt something hard in the sweet, I realised that the tip of the tooth “UL1”, which the dentist had built up, had come away. On arrival at Hull Interchange, we walked immediately to the Lion and Key.

My first drink, when Janet went to the bar to order a pepperoni pizza with green pesto for me, and cottage pie for herself, was a pint of White Rose Honey Blonde, 4.2% a.b.v., very blonde, somewhat citrus-tasting.

Before the food arrived, I went to the bar for the second round. I had a pint of the in-house brewery’s Mosaic, again very blonde, not as citrus-tasting, though, as the other.

Janet had lemonade and blackcurrant cordial both times.

“Pizzas don’t come any better than that one,” I commented, when the server afterwards asked if everything was all right. “I said that, last time,” I added; “and I’m saying it again.” After we left, we noticed that “Riverhouse Coffee Co.”, where we’d gone on the last visit to Hull, was closed for the Christmas period. We’d not intended to go there, though; we were heading for the Minster. But we found that closed. We visited the second-hand bookshop “Janet. E. Books” in Hepworth Arcade, including climbing the steep, narrow stairs to have a look on the first floor. Janet bought two or three books. As we walked along Whitefriargate, we saw an A-board pointing left through an archway into the Custom House yard, to a café there; so we followed it. The establishment was called “Liquid Jade”. I had an americano coffee and Janet a hot chocolate.

We also visited the HMV store in Whitefriargate and bought three DVDs. By now it was time to return to Paragon Interchange, visit the loo, use an ATM, and get the bus back (boarded, 15:54). It was the selfsame bus as on the outward journey (“Bus 21269”; that had been “Trip 10”, this was “Trip 17”), but it felt warm and toasty. I decided that I was too thirsty to go to the off-licence for beer, so we went straight to Casper’s. We both had two rounds of Fanta Orange. Janet had chicken kebab with pita bread, rice and salad, and I had fettuccine Bolognese. She also had a wedge of lemon cheesecake or similar for dessert. When we left, a №10 bus arrived a few minutes later (18:35), though we had to wait on it for some ten minutes before its departure. Checked e-mail accounts (19:18). Transferred today’s seven photos from the camera’s SD card to the WD Elements HDD (19:21).…
