Austrian Tyrol and Innsbruck
Hotel Hocheder, Klosterstrasse 121 A-6100 Seefeld in Tirol
- DAY 7 - ACHENSEEBAHN
Achensee
After another sumptuous breakfast, we travel back 100 years in time to the age of steam and coal as we take a scenic train ride on the truly historic Achenseebahn. These coal fired locomotives, amongst the oldest in the world, take us on at leisurely pace through the magical Inn Valley to the beautiful Achensee Lake.
Here is the perfect photo opportunity before rejoining our coach and continuing our journey back in time to the medieval municipality of Rattenberg. Wandering through the narrow streets we see examples of silver mining and glass blowing crafts as this quaint town reveals charming examples of these skills. We may decide to climb up to the ruined castle for its splendid views of town and its surrounds.
We arrive back at the hotel late afternoon in time to relax in the Spa, take a walk around the lake or visit the enchanting church opposite the hotel before we enjoy true Tyrolean hospitality for our last evening meal at our hotel The
Krumers.[i]
[i] There are two Krumers hotels in Seefeld. Perhaps one of them was previously used for this “Austrian Tyrol and Innsbruck” tour and the name was not deleted from the itinerary before it was issued in connection with our tour.
Janet wrote: “Good sleep. I was up at 6.46am. I heard Mr. B[lackbird] before it was light, and he’s still at it (it’s 7.30am!). At the moment it’s dry. We can only hope! This morning it’s the ‘little train’, and this afternoon Rattenberg.”
I noted: “Janet vacated the bathroom at 7.00am.” So I went in and showered
etc. I’m not complaining (!), but why has the Samsung computer been working correctly here in Seefeld? Back at home, I’ve been used to pressing the
“” button and finding that its blue light has gone out seconds later, so that I’ve had to press it again to start the computer. Here the computer has been starting up after the first press. Checked
Gmail (07:48)… I wrote to Andrew, but everything froze up when I tried to send it. We went down for breakfast. I didn’t fancy any of the items on the dinner menu, so I indicated the whole lot with a brace along the margin and wrote, “Nothing, thanks.” (Were we on the “naughty table” today, so that we were the only people to whom this could refer?) Bernie had suggested that, as well as marking our choices for the optional main-course item, we should indicate any other item that we didn’t want, to avoid waste from preparing too many. “Back to the room, 8.35am, to try again,” I wrote in my notebook; and I managed to send the e-mail to Andrew this time:

Subject: Greetings from Seefeld-in-Tirol
Hi Andrew,
We’re having a grand time. On the free day we made our way to Untermieming where Chris, his then fiancée Pam, her mother (because I’d by then become sans girlfriend) and I had stayed 52 years ago. We found the spot where a photo of me and Pam had been taken, which had whetted Janet’s interest and resulted in a blind date.
The waterfall was just a trickle then, but was quite fierce the other day so that we couldn’t get close.
We were all alone down there, but very strangely someone appeared, whom we asked to take the photo. Hopefully see you Tuesday.

“We set off at 9.15am,” Janet wrote. “[It was] already sunny and quite warm. The weather was
perfect. The views were superb: we could clearly see the tops of all the mountains.” This related to the journey to Jenbach overall. For initially, I wrote: “Descended into fog,
ca.9.25am”, and that we descended “below clouds, 9.29am”. Meanwhile, I was noting what Bernie was saying:
-
Jenbach |
regular |
1,435 mm |
|
cog |
1 m |
|
Zillertalbahn |
760 mm |
This referred to the three railways served by Jenbach railway station: the
ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways), which had a “regular” gauge (“standard gauge” is the more usual term: 4 foot 8½ in); the “Achensee Steam Cogwheel Railway” (1 metre gauge); and the Zillertal Railway (“Zillertalbahn”: 760 mm gauge).
- Achensee
1880’s
The “Achensee” railway was proposed and constructed in the “1880’s”:
- In 1886, Theodor Friedrich Freiherr von Dreifuss proposed to connect Jenbach to the Achensee. Despite concerns by villagers in the area, the proposal was supported by the monastery at Fiecht, which owned the Achensee and ran steam boats on the lake. Consent to build the line was given on 1 August 1888 by Emperor Franz Josef. The line was constructed by the Soenderop Company of Berlin. The official opening of the line was on 8 June 1889.

Bernie told us times for later today and for tomorrow:
- Back by 4.30pm
Tomorrow 10.15am — arr[ive] Munich airport 13:00
7.30am–10.00am breakfast
I noted that we went “through Hall [in Tirol], 09:46”, and added the words “silver mining” and “thaler”.
- In 1477, it got the right of coinage, when the Tyrolian mint was moved from Meran to Hall.

What escaped both Janet’s and my memory, was that at Seespitz station we boarded the coach and were taken just less than two miles along the lakeside to Pertisau. So my note
- arr[ived] 12:03
Meet up, 1.00pm
must refer to our arrival at (and plans for departure from) the latter location.
Janet wrote: “The scenery was marvellous. Initially the locomotive pushed us up the inclines and then it was transferred to the front and we were pulled to the beautiful Achensee lake. Stunning! Stunning! The weather could not have been any better. It was magic. We found a nearby restaurant where we had an early lunch of Maximilian Schnitzel. Too much for me. Two schnitzels and a huge pile of chips. I ate one chip and [John] ate my second schnitzel. I enjoyed what I had.”

I’d taken three photos of the church’s octagonal interior, while facing forward. I wanted to get up and take more photos in the opposite direction, but half a dozen or so people arrived and a service started. It was a spoken service — there was no music — a mixture of calls and responses, interspersed with reciting
- Vater unser im Himmel,
geheiligt werde dein Name.
Dein Reich komme.
Dein Wille geschehe,
wie im Himmel so auf Erden.
Unser tägliches Brot gib uns heute.
Und vergib uns unsere Schuld,
wie auch wir vergeben unsern Schuldigern.
Und führe uns nicht in Versuchung,
sondern erlöse uns von dem Bösen.
Amen.
and
- Gegrüßet seist du, Maria,
voll der Gnade, der Herr ist mit dir.
Du bist gebenedeit unter den Frauen,
und gebenedeit ist die Frucht deines Leibes, Jesus.
Heilige Maria,
Mutter Gottes, bitte für uns Sünder jetzt
und in der Stunde unseres Todes.
Amen.
The man officiating was dressed in ordinary clothes, not priestly vestments. We remained seated, out of respect; but after the “Vater unser” and “Gegrüßet seist du, Maria” had been repeated time and time and time again, we decided to slip away. Outside, we met a woman who was walking in the direction of the church. She looked like a tourist, not a “local”, so we warned her that a service was in progress. She told us that she was Japanese, and seemed delighted when I responded, “Konnichiwa!”

Janet wrote: “We returned to the same restaurant we’d been to last night, since we’d enjoyed it so much. [John] had Aberdeen Angus
steak[ii] with potato wedges and salad, and a Schwarzbier, a glass of wine, a grappa, and a coffee. I had a ham and cheese toast with a side salad, which was really [the size I’d expect for] a main meal salad! I really enjoyed the toastie but couldn’t eat much salad. I also had a mango juice and — a bramble
juice.[iii] Mmmm! I’d ordered fried pancake strips with raisins, apple purée and plum
compote.[iv] Bloody hell! We were presented with a huge platter of pancake [pieces]. [John] couldn’t eat any because it was eggy. I liked it but obviously couldn’t eat very much of the pancake: I ate ‘all’ the plum compote, though! Wow! Huge portions everywhere! Another really good meal at a smart, clean and comfy (and welcoming) place.”
According to my notes, the wine I had was:
- Blaufränkisch
Classic 2020
[from] Mittelburgenland
[ii] The steak was “tagliata”, which apparently just means “cut” or “sliced” in Italian.
[iii] These appear as “Pfanner” on the bill. “Hermann Pfanner Getränke GmbH is an Austrian beverage producer… The company was founded in 1856.… Pfanner produces about 210 different products, fruit juices being among the best known ones”
[Wikipedia].
[iv] This was “Kaiserschmarrn”: “an Austrian dessert; a sweetened light shredded pancake filled with cream or fruit sauce, jam and compote, and powdered with sugar”
[Wiktionary].

“It was raining when we left: so what?!” Janet wrote. “We were back in our room just before 8pm. I packed one case and my backpack, did my teeth, had a shower, did this [journal entry], and we were both in bed at
ca.9.55pm. [I’ll be] up [at] 7am tomorrow morning. Last day: boo hoo! — although I’m always happy to get back to our little house, a shower I like, and a comfy bed [that] I know. So: not too shoddy! Today was the second best day. (The weather could not have been better. Perfect.) The first was finding the waterfall. Amazing. Who knew! Mr. B[lackbird] has only just stopped singing.”
My only involvement in the packing was to collect together all tickets, receipts, maps,
etc. for adding to the case. I transferred 173 photos from the camera’s
SD card to the WD Elements HDD (20:16–20:20), and copied the files from there to “Pictures” on the
Samsung computer (20:22). Checked my Gmail inbox (20:26): there were five more
