Day 241 Thursday 29 August Ezekiel 9-12

This was the Cruise News for today:

And this was the Explore Ashore:

Created a PowerPoint presentation for the photos from 27 Aug. (05:58 — i.e. 06:58); started editing them with Photoshop, then arranging each after I’d edited it in the presentation — did 20 of them (06:03–07:12 — i.e. 07:03–08:12). Janet got up towards the end of this time. She left the cabin and unbeknown to me at the time went to reception and asked if they could provide a chair with a back, for all there was to sit on at the desk/dressing table was a stool, and after a long session on the computer my back would ache. She came back, and ca.9am we went for breakfast. My appetite was back, and I had orange juice, and Rice Krispies, bacon, sausage and baked beans, and coffee. When we got back to the cabin, there was a sizeable armchair in there, a bit low for sitting at the desk but better than the stool.

Ca.10am, we went ashore on a hot and sunny day. We found a tourist information office in Avenue de la République and bought tickets for the Mont Faron “Téléphérique”, which included the trip there by bus.… The bus stop was nearby. Janet offered a woman with a walking-stick the use of her folding chair, which she declined. She did tell me how to say “Would you like to sit?” in correct French, though. We waited a little over 10 minutes for the №40 bus (10:28).

As I hesitated, to take the above photo, I heard the attendant’s voice, “Allez!”, behind me. Before setting out to walk we had a drink in the adjacent café Le Panoramique. I wanted specifically to visit the zoo, and led Janet off in the direction indicated on a map.… Janet doesn’t like the idea of caged animals, so wasn’t as keen on the idea as I was.

Most of the big cats were asleep. And most of the animals were behind wire mesh, which made it difficult to photograph them clearly and satisfactorily.

The zoo specialises — so the blurb said — in breeding. Indeed, a pair of Jungle Cats had kittens, which were being suckled. What the tomcat thought the kittens could do with a whole chicken that he presented to them, I don’t know.

We sat under an umbrella outside a café, but when after several minutes it was evident that we were invisible to the staff, we went back to Le Panoramique. They had sandwiches on the menu, but the older man who came to serve us (perhaps the father of the the not-that-young, reasonably affable man who served us previously) told me that there weren’t any. He seemed a bit grumpy when I declined to have anything to eat instead, and we just had drinks.

We found a way through the buildings between Avenue de la République and the quayside, and looked for the boat trip, which was included in our “Téléphérique” tickets; but the only boat trips we could find appeared to be different ones, so we decided to return to the ship. We were feeling a bit weary, anyway; and although my feet have improved greatly over the past few months, I was feeling footsore.

We went for a late lunch and a drink outside the Lido restaurant near the pool. I had some stew and after that several wedges of pizza. Then we went to the promenade deck for last views of the town. I tried to see — but didn’t succeed in finding — where on the hillside the “Téléphérique” station was. We — Janet, mainly — got chatting to an Indian gentleman. He pointed to where he said it was, but I still couldn’t make it out.

We went back to the cabin. Copied today’s photos (101) from the camera (15:24–15:27 — i.e. 16:24–16:27). According to Janet: “We returned to the cabin and had a bit of a film show.” Perhaps “a bit”, because it included raw photos, not edited and made into a PowerPoint presentation. “Then [John] had a kip in his chair and I washed my hair.” Continued editing and presenting photos from 27 Aug. — did 39 of them at various times (15:45, 16:34–16:52, 20:35–22:48 — i.e. 16:45, 17:34–17:52, 21:35–23:48). So the “kip” must have been between 16:45 and 17:34. For ca.6pm we went for dinner. I contented myself with crispbread and cheese, and a peach. Couldn’t face any of the hot foods in the buffet. Back in the cabin there was a confusing letter from Destination Services about a “sporting tour” of Barcelona — perish the thought that we would ever book a tour with even the least hint of “sport” in it! There was also disembarkation information. We went to Destination Services to confirm that we were booked on the correct tour, then to Reception because Janet had some queries about disembarkation and departing prompted by the information sheet. We returned to the cabin, then went to the Broadway Show Lounge in time to choose the best-positioned seats for “A Feast of Lloyd-Webber with a Helping of Rice”. Janet wrote: “It was absolutely brilliant. We were very impressed — again. Tonight, though, was the best of the three we’ve seen.” At one point, there was an “Eva Perón” song from Evita, but three women appeared on stage, singing solo in turns, then ensemble in harmony. I wondered whether the other two were Marge and Tina![i] Back in the cabin, Janet had a shower, worked out how much we’d spent today, and updated her journal, before going to bed not long after 10.30pm. As indicated above, I was on the computer till 23:48.
[i] The song Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina was parodied as “Don’t cry for me, Marge and Tina” in The Goodies, a 1970s–1980s TV comedy series combining surreal sketches and situation comedy, in the episode “Goodies and Politics” broadcast on 14 January 1980.
