DAY 3: Lima to Arequipa B
Known as the ‘City of the Kings’, today’s tour combines the culture of historic downtown Lima with the modern district of Miraflores. You will first visit the main square to see the Cathedral, Government Palace and City Hall. Next see one of the best preserved monasteries in Lima, the beautiful Santo Domingo Convent and then on to Miraflores, a bustling shopping area with stupendous views of the Pacific Ocean. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Arequipa to spend the night.

Got up ca.5.40am; shaved, showered and got dressed; and was at the computer ca.6.20am. Felt mostly OK, and Janet when she got up she was OK too. After she got up, she re-packed the cases, and I was called upon to zip them up and click the belts shut. We were going to take the suitcases down, but when the lift came, one of the occupants reminded us that we were to leave them outside the room door. We handed the key-card over, and went for breakfast. It was a little past 8am. We boarded the coach and were taken for a tour of the city. In Miraflores we passed El Beso (the kiss), a large sculpture in the “Parque del Amor” (Love Park) by the Pacific Ocean.

Also in Miraflores we passed Huaca Pucllana, a great adobe and clay pyramid, built from seven staggered platforms. It was built by the Lima Culture, a society which developed in the Peruvian Central Coast between the years 200AD and 700AD.

There were rooms off the nave with galleries of paintings, statues, etc. One, especially, had art-works about Santa Rosa (1586–1617), who became known for both her life of severe asceticism and her care of the needy of the city through her own private efforts. Her name cropped up all over the place.

We passed two sets of doors, either side of a short corridor: one had its gilding painted over, to prevent theft in former times; the other had its gilding restored.

The corridor led to a small courtyard, where there were toilets. At the end of this was a fenced-off area where a craftsman was working on some wooden sculptures. These had flat backs so must have been for mounting against a wall.

—to find the coach just round the corner

We reboarded the coach from there. Andreas took us to a restaurant where we had lunch. I saw that guinea pig was on the menu. My ordering it piqued the interest of those around: a “Bravo!” response, almost. It was a whole one, deep fried. I ripped off the limbs and ate the small amount of meat that I could find.

Andreas stayed to supervise the checking in of luggage. Janet and I had been assigned seats apart, so I sat between two strangers. No matter: it was only an hour-and-half flight, I was seriously flagging at the baggage claim conveyer. Janet was too. Our tour manager Boris, who looked a bit like Whoopee Goldberg, and a woman called Mariel were there to meet us, and they escorted us to the coach. Room keys and already-completed tourist forms just requiring signature were handed out on the bus. So at the hotel all we had to do was hand passport, the stub of the Tarjeta, and the form over. We got a porter to take our cases up, and on Boris’s advice gave him a 5-soles coin. I was feeling ill: the hacking cough… Janet had some unpacking and organising, etc., to do, but I got straight into bed without brushing teeth. It was perhaps a bit after 10pm.…
