Mediterraneo Hotel, Λιμένας Χερσόνησου, Crete
23:20–01:50 Heraklion airport–Leeds Bradford Jet2 LS444

“I was up at 7.45am,” Janet wrote. “I’d had a reasonable sleep, but not enough, really.” I shaved and showered after she vacated the bathroom.… Found that I had a few itchy heat-bumps on the legs. Janet continued, “I’d been wondering, after seeing inside that security locker, if our cases would fit in a couple more — if we could ‘bag’ them. I really feel that I wouldn’t have left the hotel if our bags were there in that unlocked room. So, after breakfast, I packed, then we took a case down to test, and I was ‘made up’ that it fitted, with room to spare. Yes! So we brought the other case down, and put that in security locker №3. Everything was then secure. I only had my backpack to carry, and I’d emptied it a bit.” So, last night, we’d investigated the lockers, and reserved one by inserting €2 into the slot and removing the key. We’d intended to lock our valuables in this, and leave the cases (as most people did) in that room. But when we found lockers free and room enough in each of them for a case, we “bagged” two more. In a way, the hotel’s inability to provide us with late check-out did us a favour, because instead of our having to pay €35 for that, we merely paid €6 for three lockers (plus the €2 to reserve one of them last night). At ca.9.30am I had the first glass of the τσικουδιά that I’d decanted into a water bottle yesterday. I had further tots, but didn’t finish it. I re-labelled the bottle “
ΤΣΙΚΟΥΔΙА” and left it on the dressing table when we vacated the room. “We checked out,” Janet wrote, “then sat at the Pool Bar until lunch-time. Whilst there, I decided that afterwards we’d get a taxi to Piskopianó. So we did, photographed a very pretty Greek Orthodox church (not open, unfortunately), then had a drink at the Antidote.”

“A black feral cat became friendly and ended up on [John]’s knees.” I suggested that we didn’t need a taxi, that we could walk because it wouldn’t be that far; and, indeed it was only ca.½-mile from Antidote, Piskopianó, to The Half Note, Koutouloufári.

“Janina[i] was there (plus a lot of swifts[ii] — also in Piskopianó) and we spent a very pleasant couple of hours chatting to her. We’d assumed she was a local, but she was Lithuanian — and a graphic designer! She spent the winters doing that, and the summers working in cafés as she enjoyed meeting people. It was less stressful too.”
[i] Janina: the “very friendly waitress” of Tuesday 17 May 2022.
[ii] Swifts: So Janet wrote; but the only memory I have (cf. below) is of swallows. If I’d seen swifts at The Half Note, wouldn’t I have asked Janina what the Greek word for them was, as I had with “χελιδόνι”?

I noticed that Mariana across the road, where Janet had bought earrings on our previous visit to Koutouloufári, sold “Gold Jewerly”.

The server behind the bar in the above photo from our previous visit, may have been the same one who, when I said “Καλημέρα!” as I passed her to go downstairs to the “WC”, replied with the corrective “Καλησπέρα!”
“When does ‘μέρα’ become ‘σπέρα’?” I asked.
 “About four o’clock.”

Bill from The Half Note, issued “17:27:18”. I had a Mythos beer, a rakí, one of the three “smoothies”, and an americano coffee. Janet had a Coca Cola Light, two of the three “smoothies”, and a decaffeinated coffee. “Smoothie” №3 was pineapple, pear and mango; №4 was pineapple, blackberry, blueberry and banana; №6 was apple, raspberry, blueberry and mango.

“We took a taxi back to the hotel. [John] was a bit ‘popped’ as he’d had a beer and a carafe of rakí. So we went to the bar and had an iced water. We had our final meal at the hotel,…”

“…then retrieved all our stuff (only cost €6 as opposed to €35 for late check-out), and sat in the lobby until our private taxi arrived at 8.40pm to take us to the airport. We didn't want to leave: we'd had such a great holiday.”

At the airport (Janet wrote): “We found our small (what a pleasant surprise!) queue, then our taxi driver appeared with [John]’s hat. He’d left it in the taxi. Bless him for bothering! Cretans: nice people.”

We also had a look in the duty-free shop, where we bought soft nougat and a bottle of τσικουδιά.
