[2022]

14:00 The Deep, Tower Street, Hull HU1 4DP

… Janet and I walked to the “St. Hugh’s Avenue” bus stop in Clee Road, and got the №250 bus (09:53) to Hull Paragon Interchange. Instead of turning right into Hainton Avenue, it turned right into Ladysmith Road; thence, along Pasture Street; then right into Hainton Avenue, resuming its normal route. I saw a sign to the left, as the bus was turning right into Hainton Avenue, “Road ahead closed: access only”, so that explained the route we’d just taken. Three sets of people with push-chairs got on the bus: a group of African women, and two others. When the third got on and found that there was no room, she found that she could not fold her pushchair, so the second folded hers to make room. Finally, a wheelchair user boarded, so the Africans had to fold theirs, but there was no room in the forward luggage rack; so because Janet and I were seated in the extra-legroom seats by the emergency exit, I offered to accommodate the folded pushchair in front of me. I thought the spirit of co-operation was a good thing, and wanted to be part of it. Last time I was on the №250 bus was when I went to Hull Royal Infirmary, and I found disconcerting the unfamiliarity of part of the route, only realising afterwards that it had missed Humberside Airport. Today, I paid more attention: formerly, on leaving Keelby, the bus would have turned left at the T-junction and gone along the A18 through Great Limber and onward, calling at the airport, and afterwards turning right and going along the A15 till it got to the traffic circle, then turning right along the A1077 to Barton; today, the bus turned right at the T-junction and went along the B1211 through Brocklesby and Ulceby, continuing from there along the A1077 through Wootton, Thornton Curtis, Barrow upon Humber and Barton-upon-Humber. On arrival in Hull, we walked to the Lion and Key.

I had a pint of Kaltenberg lager (4.1% a.b.v., according to a supplier’s website), and later another one, and Janet had a lemonade with blackcurrant cordial. As on 4 January 2020 and 22 July 2019 I had a pepperoni pizza with green pesto and Janet had cottage pie. I asked them, at her request, to “lose the chips”, so it was served with just peas. The food took an hour to arrive. On 22 July 2019 we’d gone to the nearby “Riverhouse Coffee Co.”, and today we went to “Wonky Tulip” in the same location. I had an americano coffee with extra shot, and Janet had a hot chocolate with a “blondie” (a brownie made with white chocolate instead of brown). These are supposed to be soft, though, but this one was hard; indeed, it fragmented into several pieces. From there, we went along High Street so as to pass under Roger Millward Way, then crossed the River Hull by footbridge to get to The Deep.

Till recently, Janet has been unwilling to travel on the crowded №250 bus or to be in other situations where there’s no social distancing; but she has now decided that to shield oneself completely does nothing to develop and maintain immunity to COVID. That’s just as well, for despite The Deep’s insistence on booking specific visiting times, there were places — as when entering, shown above, and at the various exhibits — where people were crowded together. And there were children — the ultimate “super-spreaders” — running around. The visit was much as described in “22 July 2019”, so I shan’t go into a lot of detail here. To Janet’s disappointment, the initial tank of live exhibits lacked the seahorses.

One of the attendants let a couple out from that level, so we tagged along, and so, as before, didn’t have to join queues for a lift or stairs back to the top. We returned along High Street, so as to avoid doing what we had to do last time: cross the very broad Roger Millward Way with long delays by the pedestrian crossings. We went back to “Paragon” and did what we’d done on 29 February 2020: went to the London Way café for refreshments. Janet had a little bottle of apple juice and I orange juice. She had a toasted ham and cheese sandwich; I, a chicken and sweet chilli wrap with chips and dressed salad. We were back at Bay 10 in time for the 17:00 №250 bus (boarded, 16:56), and shortly after our arrival in Grimsby a №10 bus came (18:31). Transferred today’s 20 photos from the camera’s SD card to the WD Elements HDD (19:06), and edited them with Photoshop 19:11–19:38)…
