going on the knocker, doing knocker work

going to people’s houses from door to door, evangelising.
In 1966 the door-to-door programme of the Full Gospel Church, Fleetwood, used the ploy of a religious census to ascertain whether people were interested in the Christian faith. Follow-up visits were offered to those who did show such an interest.
Later, a more direct approach was used. Often, people would just say that they weren’t interested; but my favourite rejection-line, which made me chuckle at the time, was one that a middle-aged lady used: “No, love, we’re Primitives!”
